Switching Databases for NTP Software Storage M&A®

 NTP Software News & Events

NTP Software exhibited at the Storage Decisions - New York conference on 9/22 and 9/23. It was an exciting show.

Last newsletter we mentioned that NTP Software was partnering with Hitachi Data Systems(HDS). We have since issued a press release, which also includes a quote from HDS.

We are always on the lookout for common questions we receive from our customers. A number of our customers have asked us what is the best approach to switching databases for NTP Software Storage M&A. If you have decided to re-point your existing installation of NTP Software M&A to a new database, you can accomplish this change fairly easily. There are many reasons for wanting to make this kind of change. Some of the reasons for making this change include: retirement of an existing back-end database server; the need to adapt to a new server layout in a disaster recovery scenario; or even the desire to point the system to a second database for special reporting requirements that you want to keep separate from your primary Storage M&A production database.

When NTP Software M&A installs it sets up two databases, one for production called StorageMA and one for demo data called StorageMADemo. The easiest model for quickly switching between two databases is to reuse the ODBC settings leveraged to access that demo database. This is the mechanism we will illustrate in this article.

The easiest part of this configuration change is pointing the agent at the new database. You do this by opening up the Data Agent Admin web interface and selecting the database settings. Change this entry to point to the new database you want Storage M&A to use and save those settings. The Analysis Server web site uses System ODBC DSNs to connect to the database. The quickest route to changing the database is to edit the ModelAnalysisReportingDemo DSN to point to your alternate database.

Once the ModelAnalysisReportingDemo DSN is modified you can direct the Analysis Server web site to use that DSN by opening the Database Switch Utility. When the utility opens select the StorageMADemo database from the choices and click the Change button.

If the credentials on the new database are different you can then run the DB Connection Utility to set the proper credentials. The next time the agents runs it will place its data in the new database and the Analysis Server web site will show this data.

Changing back is as simple as reversing the process.
