Sr. Storage Architect, NTP Software
Archiving is a key component of managing storage. Ensuring that primary storage is being used cost- effectively is very important. Back in our February 2009 issue we introduced NTP Software ODA™ which provides for On-Demand Archiving™. In that issue we also pointed out that the product enables some additional and important archiving scenarios:
Quota-Driven Archiving™ - real-time quota policies trigger archiving through integration with software such as Symantec Enterprise Vault™, based on thresholds relating to storage growth. These quota-driven policies allow for hands-off automation at an extremely granular level - down to the folder or even file level.

User-Driven Archiving™ - engages the end-user in storage clean-up via archiving. Users can make archiving decisions based on the business value of the data. Connecting users to the process adds real value and allows the users to understand what's happening to their data and why.

Support for these archiving scenarios hasn't changed. In discussions with our customers and partners we have noted that there is also a pressing need for end-users to be able to “right click” on files from Windows Explorer and thereby send them to archive.

To address this we have created “NTP Software Right-Click Archiving™”. This is a new and powerful technology that you can add to your archiving arsenal. NTP Software Right-Click Archiving™ is incorporated within NTP Software ODA™ and integrates with Microsoft Windows Explorer.

With Right-Click Archiving™ added to the existing features of NTP Software ODA™, your users are part of the archiving process in a way that was not possible before. For example, after a big project is complete the project manager can simply select and right click on the files that need to be retained and send them off to your long-term archive.

NTP Software ODA™ with Right-click Archiving™ increases your ROI on primary storage by making it easy for users to archive files to less expensive secondary storage. This also makes your job easier as it facilitates the clean-up of primary storage. The integration with products like Symantec Enterprise Vault™ means that your investment in an enterprise archiving solution realizes its ROI faster.

By providing end-users with the means to easily archive data, the overall enterprise archiving process becomes significantly more cost-effective.
